Joyful Homemade Almond Mylk
It all started two months ago, when I began my journey to healing and balancing my hormone imbalances. I went from buying everything that was pre-made, fast, and easy to slowing down, making things homemade, and a desire to know exactly what I was putting into my body.
For 33 years, I didn’t have to pay attention to what I put in my body but as I’ve been learning (how I did not know this beforehand is unbelievable to me) is that everything we do, eat, and feel impacts our hormones.
I absolutely love coffee. I love making it in the morning and drinking it as my morning drink choice. But, as I did some research I started to see and learn that there are a ton of hormonal disruptors in everyday coffee creamers that I was consuming. And because of this, I wanted to put the most “clean and hormone friendly” coffee creamer in my coffee in the morning. Since then, I’ve swapped out oat milk for almond milk and have even gone as far as to making it myself which is more cost effective, and efficient for those days when I run out of creamer, I can just make it at home.
I also want to share that I also started eating breakfast before drinking coffee as well which also supports balanced hormones. So, once I started realizing that the coffee creamer brands I was buying such as Unsweetened Almond Malk that were super clean and minimal ingredients, I also realized that I could make it myself at home.
And let’s be honest, I’ve been staying at home a lot (which I love btw) as I am healing so it just made sense to me that I can spend 25 minutes making homemade almond milk. The reason why it takes 25 minutes is because we are going the EXTRA mile and removing the skins of the almonds to make it even more smooth and silky. I’m sure there’s a faster way to make this such as using a nut milk maker machine, but I enjoy the ritual and I have the time at the moment. Maybe in the future though if I’m still loving this and my life starts to get more busy.
This recipe is for those who are seeking to make a clean, healthy, and happy batch of homemade almond milk. I make it when I am in my domestic-homemade-era, when I know I will be home all week and can enjoy my creamer with my lattes. Here’s the recipe and the instructions.
Joyful Homemade Almond Mylk
Prep: 8 hours (soaking time)
Cook: 25 minutes
Yield: Approximately 4 cups
Ingredients:
- 4 cups of filtered water
- 2 cups of unroasted and unsalted almonds
- 1 tbsp of vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp of Ceylon cinnamon
- 3-4 pitted organic Medjool dates
- Pinch of Himalayan salt
Equipment:
Instructions:
1. Soak Almonds:
- Begin by placing the unroasted and unsalted almonds in a 64oz Glass Mason Jar.
- Cover them with filtered water and let them soak overnight for maximum flavor and creaminess. Alternatively, you can use hot water to soak the almonds for 2 hours if you're short on time.
- After the soaking period, strain the water from the jar, leaving you with plump, hydrated almonds.
2. Peel the Almonds:
- To achieve a silky-smooth almond mylk, gently peel the almonds by squeezing them between your fingers. The skins should easily slip off, leaving you with the creamy, blanched almonds. This may take up to 10-20 minutes.
3. Blend Your Mylk:
- In your Vitamix blender, combine the peeled almonds, vanilla extract, Ceylon cinnamon, pitted dates, a pinch of Himalayan salt, and the 4 cups of filtered water.
- Blend on high speed for approximately 1.5 minutes, or until you have a smooth mixture.
4. Strain the Mylk:
- Pour the mixture directly into a Glass Pitcher.
- Place the cheesecloth over the Vitamix Blender and pour the mylk back into the blender. The cheesecloth will efficiently capture any almond pulp, ensuring your mylk is velvety and free from grainy texture.
7. Store and Enjoy:
- Pour your homemade almond mylk into Glass Jars with Lids. This delightful mylk will stay fresh for up to 5 days when refrigerated.
- Release the collected almond pulp into the trash can and be sure to rinse the cheesecloth for future use.
- I love to froth this in my espresso machine milk frother but you can use anykind you like and it tastes delicious
- Bonus: sprinkle some cinnamon on top for extra joy
This practice has become a ritual that I am so grateful for now. It's again, for those times in your life when you are feeling like you are spending more time at home and really could use a hug from your homemade rituals.
